Ynysybwl is situated in its own valley, between the RHONDDA and CYNON valleys, with narrow, mountain roads leading to both.It is a former mining village, the Lady Windsor Colliery having closed some years ago,but the area has always been surrounded by many hill farms, some of which pre-date the village by hundreds of years. The village is well endowed with "waterring holes",ie.PUBS.
On the way to the Rhondda Fach,is the hamlet of LLANWYNNO (LLANWONNO),which is literally just a pub and a church (LLANWONNO meaning the Church of St. Gwynno). It is therefore possible to have SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT either side of the road. The whole area is surrounded by forestry,(St. Gwynno's Forest),which is a working forest, run by the Forestry Commission,or Enterprise,as they now like to be called.
Within the forest is an old farm,DAERWYNNO,which now serves as an outdoor activities centre, offering such activities as walking and canoeing. The centre is run by the Daerwynno Outdoor Activity Centre, and is fully operational.
